Frequently Asked Questions
What will happen at my first visit?
We will complete a detailed medical and dental history, a thorough examination to measure for bone loss, loose teeth, bite problems, screen for signs of oral cancer, and identify other signs of periodontal disease.
Please provide us with the following prior to or at your initial visit to make the best use of your appointment time:
- Your referral form and available x-rays from your referring dentist.
- A list of medications (patient registration and medical history may be completed at online patient registration).
- If you have dental insurance, please bring completed forms and insurance cards to your appointment.
Please note all patients under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Please notify us of any medical conditions or concerns prior to treatment.
Will it hurt?
We will make every effort to be a gentle as possible. The periodontal examination can be performed with little or no discomfort.
Do I need x-rays?
We will need current x-rays in most cases to make an accurate diagnosis of your condition and treatments needs. If your referring dentist has taken x-rays, you may request that they be forwarded to us or you may obtain them and bring them to your first appointment.
What will it cost?
Since all patients and cases are different, Dr. Bloch must complete his examination before establishing your treatment plan and the fees for care.
The fee for periodontal treatment or dental implants can vary considerably depending on the complexity of treatment. An approximate fee can usually be determined at the initial visit but on occasion, further diagnostic information and initial treatment must be completed before the final treatment plan can be established. Our practice philosophy is to treat our patients as conservatively as possible to meet treatment goals.
Will my insurance cover the cost of treatment?
Most dental insurance policies include benefits for periodontal and dental implant treatment. Although it is not required by most plans prior to treatment, we will submit a predetermination of benefits to your insurance carrier. While these plans are intended to assist you financially in obtaining necessary care, your benefits do not typically cover all required services. We will work to maximize your coverage; however, you must accept financial responsibility for your healthcare.
Will I need surgical treatment?
Not everyone needs periodontal surgery. If detected and treated early, gum disease can often be controlled without surgery. We will make recommendations based on your specific situation. Our practice philosophy is to treat patients as conservatively as possible to attain treatment goals.
Can my teeth be saved?
The recent advances in periodontal treatment allow us to successfully treat most teeth. Should this not be possible for some or all of your teeth, dental implants are an excellent alternative for most patients. A complete evaluation is essential to determine the best course of treatment for you.
What if I don’t pursue treatment?
Periodontal disease is a progressive, painless infection. Delay in treatment can lead to further bone loss and gum recession, limit treatment options, and contribute to the development and progression of other systemic diseases. Over time, untreated periodontal disease may lead to tooth loss and additional health problems.
Will I go back to my general dentist?
Dr. Bloch will work closely with your dentist. Excellent communication and coordinated care with your dentist are often critical to the success of treatment.
Upon the completion of periodontal or implant therapy, you will return to your referring doctor for ongoing dental care. In many cases, an alternating schedule of maintenance visits between offices may be indicated to preserve your periodontal and general dental health.
