Pre-Operative Instructions

The following instructions may be helpful when preparing for your upcoming periodontal surgery. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any last minute questions. You should receive necessary prescriptions along with a postoperative instruction sheet. Please have all prescriptions filled prior to your scheduled surgery,

It may be important to stop taking aspirin 3 days prior to your surgery. If you are taking Coumadin or another blood thinner, remember to discontinue as directed. If you take an antibiotic premed, please take it as directed before your surgery. Unless otherwise directed, please eat a light meal prior to surgery.  For your comfort, please dress in layers as the office temperature may vary. We also suggest you bring your iPod or MP3 player with you.

In order to evaluate your progress and healing, we will see you periodically for postoperative checks.  In most cases, we will see you two to three months following surgery for periodontal maintenance.  This allows us to re-evaluate the results of treatment and make suggestions for future care.


Please alert the office to any allergies or sensitivities that you might have to antibiotics. You may be prescribed an antibiotic for surgical care.  It is advisable not to take medications on an empty stomach, as nausea may result. For women taking birth control pills, be advised that antibiotics may interfere with their effectiveness.


We offer oral and intravenous sedation for your comfort.  If you are prescribed or are receiving any form of sedation you must have a ride to and from the office.  Please be sure to advise the staff when scheduling if you are taking any sleep aids, anti-depressants or other sedatives.
